Description
Fruit wine
Though grapes are a fruit, this term is usually understood as referring to non-grape wines. It is defined as such in EU law, with the unqualified term being reserved for the product of grapes.
Fruit wines have become particularly popular in places where the climate does not support Vitis vinifera easily, and can range from cold US states like Vermont and New Hampshire to tropical locations like Thailand, where banana wine might be made.
Wines can be made from any fruit (or vegetable) that can be fermented, although certain kinds of fruits are more popular than others. Sweet fruits like blueberries, apples, watermelon, plums and cherries are all popular choices for winemakers, but fruits and vegetables as unlikely as onions, eggplants, tomatoes and chilies have all been made into wine as well.
